Fashion is a multi-billion dollar industry that influences not only our clothing choices but also our perceptions of style, beauty, and identity. However, the environmental and social impact of fashion has become a growing concern in recent years. Ethical and sustainable fashion has emerged as a response to the negative consequences of fast fashion and consumerism. In this blog post, we will explore the meaning and importance of ethical and sustainable fashion and how consumers can make conscious choices to support this movement.
What is Ethical and Sustainable Fashion?
Ethical fashion refers to the fair treatment of people who work in the fashion industry, including workers in factories, farms, and textile mills. This involves ensuring that workers receive fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for their basic human rights. It also involves avoiding the use of exploitative labor practices, such as child labor or forced labor.
Sustainable fashion, on the other hand, focuses on the environmental impact of fashion production and consumption. This involves minimizing waste, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting the use of eco-friendly materials. Sustainable fashion also considers the entire life cycle of a garment, from production to disposal, and aims to minimize the negative impact at each stage.
Why is Ethical and Sustainable Fashion Important?
The fashion industry is the second-largest polluter in the world, after the oil and gas industry. The production of clothing generates large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution, and waste. Additionally, workers in the fashion industry often work in unsafe and exploitative conditions, receiving low wages and facing job insecurity.
By supporting ethical and sustainable fashion, consumers can make a positive impact on both the environment and society. By choosing clothing made from eco-friendly materials, consumers can reduce their carbon footprint and support the use of sustainable production methods. By supporting fair labor practices, consumers can help ensure that workers are treated with respect and dignity, and receive a fair wage for their work.
How Can Consumers Support Ethical and Sustainable Fashion?
Consumers can support ethical and sustainable fashion by making conscious choices when buying clothing. Here are some tips:
Choose natural and organic fabrics: Natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, and wool, are biodegradable and require fewer resources to produce than synthetic fibers like polyester.
Look for eco-friendly fashion which indicate that the clothing has been produced using eco-friendly materials and production methods.
Buy from ethical brands: Support brands that are transparent about their production processes and have policies in place to ensure fair labor practices.
Buy secondhand: Buying secondhand clothing is a great way to reduce waste and support sustainable fashion.
Invest in quality pieces: Invest in high-quality, timeless pieces that will last for years, rather than buying trendy, disposable clothing.
Ethical and sustainable fashion is not just a trend, it's a movement towards a more responsible and conscious way of producing and consuming fashion. By supporting ethical and sustainable fashion, consumers can make a positive impact on the environment and society, and promote a more sustainable future for fashion. With the rise of conscious consumers, more and more brands are adopting sustainable and ethical practices. Let's continue to make informed choices and support ethical and sustainable fashion!

]]>The latter is what we mean when we talk about slow fashion. Need based clothing is an approach to fashion that puts people and the planet before profits. It is about creating high-quality items that will last for years, rather than disposable fast fashion items that fall apart after just a few wears.
There are many benefits to slow fashion, but here are just a few:
1) Need based slow fashion supports fair wages and good working conditions for workers in the garment industry.
2) Need based slow fashion helps to preserve traditional craftsmanship techniques that are often lost in the mass production of fast fashion garments.
3) Need based slow fashion minimizes textile waste and pollution caused by the garment industry.
4) Need based slow fashion leads to fewer clothes ending up in landfill sites or being incinerated.

What is Slow?
Slow fashion is a movement in the fashion industry that promotes more sustainable, ethical, and eco-friendly practices. It encourages slower production cycles, using better quality materials and construction methods, and greater transparency from brands about their manufacturing processes. This ultimately leads to clothing that is made to last longer and have a smaller environmental impact.
The fast fashion model, which has become increasingly prevalent in recent years, is based on rapidly producing inexpensive clothing designs that are only worn for a short time before quickly going out of style. This results in mountains of cheap clothes ending up in landfill each year, as well as workers in developing countries being paid very low wages and often working in unsafe conditions. In contrast, slow fashion takes a more sustainable approach, aiming to reduce waste, empower workers, and create long-lasting products.
There are many different ways to be involved in slow fashion. Consumers can make an effort to buy fewer new clothes overall, and instead focus on buying better quality items that will last longer. When shopping for new clothes, they can look for brands that are transparent about their manufacturing processes and use sustainable materials. They can also choose to buy second hand clothes or rent clothes instead of purchasing them outright. And finally, they can take care of the clothes they already have by repairing them when they break instead of throwing them away.
By making more conscious choices about the clothing we buy and wear, we can help build a more sustainable future for the fashion industry.
Impact of Fast Fashion on the Environment
The unsustainable production practices of the fast fashion industry are having a devastating impact on the environment. The fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world, behind only the oil industry.
The enormous amount of water used in the textile production process is one of the biggest environmental impacts of the fashion industry. It takes around 2,700 litres of water to produce just one cotton shirt – that’s enough water for one person to drink for nearly three years!
The toxic chemicals used to treat fabrics can also pollute rivers and groundwater. These chemicals can cause skin irritations and respiratory problems for workers in textile factories, as well as for those who wear the clothes.
Another big impact of fast fashion is the massive amount of textile waste it generates. Around 85% of all textiles produced end up in landfill or being burned within a year – that’s a staggering 11 million tonnes every year!
So when you next go shopping, think about the environmental impact of your clothing choices. Choose sustainable slow fashion over fast fashion to help protect our planet.
Benefits of Slow Fashion for the Environment
Slow fashion is all about being more thoughtful in the way we consume and produce clothing. It is an approach to fashion that encourages slowing down, buying less, and choosing quality over quantity. This can have a major impact on the environment. Here are some of the benefits of slow fashion:
1) Slow fashion helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the textile industry. The textile industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world, responsible for 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. By choosing to buy fewer and better-made clothes, we can help to reduce these emissions.
2) Slow fashion supports small businesses and fair trade practices. The slow fashion movement has led to a resurgence in interest in supporting small businesses and artisanal craftsmanship. When you buy from small brands that use sustainable practices, you know your purchase is having a positive impact on people and communities around the world.
3) Slow fashion helps to reduce water consumption. The production of conventional clothing is extremely water-intensive, with one t-shirt taking 2,700 liters of water to produce. By opting for slow fashion instead, we can help reduce our overall water consumption.
4) Slow fashion promotes sustainable materials. Sustainable materials like organic cotton or bamboo require far less energy and resources to produce than conventional fabrics like polyester or nylon. When you choose slow fashion items made from sustainable materials, you’re helping to protect the environment long-term.
Finding Sustainable Brands and Shopping Tips
There are many ways to shop more sustainably, and it often starts with the local brands you choose to support. Look for indigenous brands that use sustainable materials like organic cotton or hemp, handwoven fabrics spun by master weavers that need support, and avoid those that rely heavily on synthetic materials like polyester. You should also look for brands that employ sustainable manufacturing practices, such as using recycled water or renewable energy.
Of course, sustainable fashion doesn't have to be expensive. There are plenty of ways to find stylish, sustainable clothing without breaking the bank. Start by checking out neighbourhood stores, which are great places to find gently used clothing from your favorite local brands.
Finally, keep in mind that how you care for your clothing plays a big role in its longevity. Treat your clothes well and they'll last longer, saving you money in the long run. When it's time to wash them, use cold water and eco-friendly laundry detergent to cut down on energy use and help protect the environment.
Conclusion
In conclusion, slow fashion is a great way to go green and reduce the environmental impacts of clothing production. Not only does it save us money in the long run by investing in quality garments, it helps promote ethical practices without sacrificing style or comfort. Plus, when we create our own unique pieces of clothing that can be worn for years to come, we are taking individual responsibility which is what makes sustainable fashion so exciting! Embracing slow fashion not only helps us make more conscious decisions when it comes to buying clothes but also gives us a chance to express ourselves through creative and original styles that we can keep wearing for many seasons ahead.

Today, our Craftsmen face grave uncertainties and onus is on us to come forward, encourage and support the entire artisan community by giving them hope, dignity, pride & empowerment.
It's time we walk hand in hand, support the vulnerable artisans, small businesses and communities dedicatedly involved in keeping our rich heritage, culture & crafts relevant and alive.
]]>It’s time we drop the anchor, pivot around the values that we used to live by, marvel at the delicate balance orchestrated by nature and pledge to live sustainably and in absolute harmony with its piety.
It’s time to dust-off the layers and find ourselves once again, to unlearn a few and relearn a few. It’s time to slow-down and treasure those precious moments, to observe the raindrops as they rush to kiss the earth, to hear the musical notes as the bees swarm to fetch the nectar, to sway with the breeze. Slow is the new normal!
I also fondly reminisce those long sojourns with friends and cousins during our holiday breaks, getting our dolls married amongst a frenzy of flowers, making mini tents, garlands and our hair decoration with a liberal use of beautiful blooms of the season. Be it a Champa, a Haar Shringaar, an Amaltas, a Genda, a Gulaab, a Gudhel or Chenar ke phool we adorned them all! I fondly remember too the torans we used to make out of mango tree leaves, plucking the kachcha Aam from the neighbours tree.
I think my love for making clothes and my eventual calling also found its roots through those petals we used to play with, inspiring me to create a life time of memories in fabrics for our would be brides, their grooms and the baraatis.
It's time we slow down, loan a moment for ourselves from our lives.
